It is almost impossible to tell the gender of a seed before you actually grow it to a certain age. There is usually about a 50/50 chance for each gender being the one for the seed but a lot of people have yielded more females than males with their seeds. There are also some seeds which can guarantee females but they are not as common. For your basic seeds you have a good chance of growing some male plants and no one wants that because you usually have to throw them out.

Buying Seeds

Whenever you are buying marijuana seeds you will have to make sure you buy enough for a decent yield. If you just buy one or two seeds then there is a good chance that you will turn up a male plant or even both seeds being male. Every seed has a 50% chance of being male and that percentage doesn’t chance on the seeds so you should buy at least 10 seeds even if you don’t want to get a huge yield because of that large chance of male plants.

It will take a little while for the marijuana plants to grow and show their gender but once you figure it out you can speed the process up and eliminate some of the plants if necessary. Some weed seeds may have a different chance of turning each gender than 50/50 but the average seed gives that chance of being each gender.
